Term1 Week 8

This week we welcomed another Room 10 friend into our class, so now we are up to 17 with just one friend left to join us after the Easter holidays.

With Sam we learnt about how to make pictograms as we sorted out the different colours of home packs and hats we have in our class.

In maths with Tracy we were looking at ordering numbers. We were able to work as a team to to put numbers in order from smallest to largest even when some were missing

On Thursday we did a Rich Maths Task, working with our maths buddies to find out how many pairs of shoes an octopus would need.

Our poem this week was also about an octopus having problems with his shoes.
In No Child Left Inside Jane helped us to develop some essential balance skills for tennis.

Can you guess what our colour was for this week rrrr.......red. Next week we will be thinking about yellow or kowhai.
On Friday our Room 5 buddies helped us to make some paper Fortune Tellers.

Finally a very active Discovery Time was had by all and we saw some great examples or working together and relating to others.

Term 1 Week 7

Welcome to a rather special purple blog this week. First of all have a listen to our special purple poem to help celebrate Purple Cake Day.

We had a visit from the health nurse who used glitter and a spray bottle to explain to us how germs spread by touching each other and also through sneezes. She then taught us how to blow our noses properly. The lesson clearly stuck as the children were very quick to remind me when we nearly missed washing our hands before morning tea one day!

We had lots of number fun when Jo popped in to share a maths rich task about some cold little kittens and their mittens. A big thank you from everyone in Room 10.

Also in maths this week we started working with our maths buddies during our warm up session. Here we are helping each other to read and order numbers to 10 .
We enjoyed looking at and  listening to the holiday diary of one of our Room 10 friends who went on a family trip. Great work!
In No Child Left Inside we continued to practice our throwing and catching skills.
I was very impressed to see some great examples of our focus Key Competency: Relating to Others this week. A great cooperative effort resulted in this spectacular rocket plane......

...and what great team work in action here to put away the rather heavy box of blocks. Well done everyone.
As Friday approached some fabulous purple cup cake pictures were sent in by one of our families to help remind us of the coming fund raising fun.
Take a look at some of the things we got up to.

Term 1 Week 6

One of our sounds this week was 'h' and we had fun making this out of play dough. We were able to practice some more when we learnt the tricky word 'here".
We had a visit from some peer mediators from Year 6 who explained to us how they are around in the playground to help out if we have a problem.
We wrote all about our weekend activities using the sentence starter: "We went to the ......"

In art we started our ' Wiggle' pictures by taking a black line for a walk around the paper. Next week we will be adding primary colours: red, yellow and blue.
When Sam was teaching us we added some more details to our portraits.
On Wednesday we had our school photos taken. Here we are all lining up ready in height order.

There were some very clever 3D models being made out of cubes this week during maths activities.
On Thursday Jane came to tell us all about the work she has done in schools in Kenya that have been supported by last year's Purple Cake Day Fundraiser. Remember Purple Cake Day is on Friday 20th so start thinking about what purple clothes you are going to wear. To find out more about Purple Cake Day and get some dress-up ideas follow this link:

In No Child Left Outside this week we started to develop our catching skills.

......and a little bit of hoola hooping as well!
Look out for our latest wall display about Pink Pigs. You can also see each of our Pink Pigs by following the link to the Kidzstuff Blog in the right sidebar of this blog.

Finally we would like to invite you to listen to our first Movie Maker clip of our weekly poem.

Term 1 Week 5

The week started with a  fun family picnic on Monday after school. It was lovely to see some of our Room 10 friends joining in the fun.
This week we went to the Nelson Museum for our first trip outside school. We learnt heaps about 4 native parrots kakapo, kaka, kea and karkariki. Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who came along to help us.
Pandemonium of Parrots: Room 10 on PhotoPeach

The Pandemonium of Parrots was a great inspiration to start us thinking about birds we might like to paint on the art panels in our Junior playground. On Friday we watched Dianne officially opening the new playground. You may have spotted some of our Room 10 friends in the paper this week showing us all how much we love our new environment. A big, big thank you to the School Community Group and the Board of Trustees who made this project happen.
In our No Child Left Inside lesson we cooled off by aiming our under arm throws into a pool of water. At the end of the lesson we saw how good our aim was by trying to splash Jane!

In Discovery Time we focused on the Key Competency of Relating to Others.

There were plenty of  examples of what these behaviours and skills sound like and look like.

Term 1 Week 4

Once again we have been finding different ways to practice basic skills in literacy and numeracy. Take a look at the range of activities we shared this week.
Practicing letters with play dough helps our fine motor skills and letter formation.
We enjoyed playing number snap. You can try this at home with just a normal set of playing cards.
We counted out blocks to match the numbers on our truck cards.
The play dough was in use again to practice patterns to 10 and get us ready for using tens frames next week.
We really like playing number bingo and can work together taking turns to be the caller.
This maths puzzle was pretty tricky but we did not give up..I wonder where the missing piece might be hiding?
We worked on developing our visual memory and spatial awareness with some other new activities.

On Thursday there was some lovely sharing going on when some friends brought in their spare animal sound cards.
Sam helped us to learn how to draw a face and we started work on our self portraits.

In Discovery Time on Friday we helped with the planting of some trees to provide shade in our new Junior Play Ground.

After all that planting we were pretty thirsty and had our lovely cold milk...yum! We are learning how to fold our cartons correctly so they can be recycled. Take a look at the video clip below to see the correct folding method.

Finally the app we used on the iPads this week was called Pocket Phonics. This aligns with the Jolly Phonics sounds we are learning. You can learn more about it by following this link:
